Salma Rhadia Mukansanga, a Rwandan international referee, was presented with the Forty under 40 Africa Award in the sports category on Saturday, March 25, at a ceremony in Sandton City, South Africa.
The Forty Under 40 Africa Awards are an annual celebration of young people under the age of forty who are making a difference in a variety of fields on the continent.
It acknowledges, recognizes, and honors a variety of Africa’s most dynamic and important thinkers who have made contributions to a wide range of businesses.
It also honors those who have made significant contributions to professional advancement, company expansion, and civic engagement while still in their youth.
The award’s organizers, Xodus Communications Limited-Ghana, hand-selected 126 nominees from 24 African nations for the prestigious accolade to honor the Second Edition of the Award, which is taking place this year.
During the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, Mukansanga served as an official. She was the first female referee for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022.
She has previously managed events like the Olympics 2022, the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the Africa Women Cup of Nations, and the CAF Women’s Champions League.
The 34-year-old was one of six female referees chosen to work the Qatar-hosted FIFA World Cup in 2022. During the group stage match between France and Australia, she served as the fourth official.
She is one of four African referees chosen to work the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which will take place from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
After receiving the 2023 FORBES Women Africa Sports Award on March 8 at a vibrant award event hosted in Pretoria, South Africa, Mukansanga now has two prizes in the month of March.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) 100 Africa Important Women list for 2022 included the Rwandan referee as well.
