Reports from China indicate that more than 30 people have died due to severe flooding, while over 100,000 have been displaced from their homes in the capital city, Beijing.

The flooding was triggered by heavy rainfall that occurred overnight from July 28 to July 29, 2025. The reported death toll may continue to rise, as health and emergency authorities in China have warned that despite ongoing rescue operations, the situation remains critical due to the difficulty of draining water and mud from the affected areas.

According to Beijing’s emergency response unit, 28 people died in the Miyun District and two in Yanqing District, with significant damage reported in seven other regions.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on rescue teams to work with dedication to reduce the number of deaths and injuries. He also instructed the suspension of school activities, construction projects, tourism, and other potentially dangerous activities. France24 noted.

To address the aftermath of this disaster, the Chinese government has allocated a relief budget of $49 million, with $27 million specifically designated for affected residents in Beijing.

According to the national weather forecast, more rainfall is expected in the coming months. In response, the government is continuing to implement preventive measures to mitigate the risks posed to citizens.
