Typhoon Kalmaegi has claimed the lives of 188 people in the Philippines and five more in Vietnam, according to official reports from both countries.

According to the BBC, the storm, which continues to change direction, is now moving westward toward Cambodia and Laos after sweeping across eastern Vietnam on October 6, 2025.

On Friday morning, widespread destruction was observed in Vietnam, with trees uprooted and houses destroyed. Thousands of residents were forced to flee their homes and seek shelter in schools and other safer locations.

Vietnamese authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, warning that flooding could intensify in several regions. The reminder comes just a week after floods in the country killed 50 people.

The number of confirmed deaths, announced Friday, has risen sharply compared to the 114 fatalities reported on the first day of the disaster. Additionally, 135 people remain missing.

The Philippine government has declared a state of emergency as the country braces for another potential typhoon expected to hit soon.

Before Kalmaegi reached Vietnam, the government had already deployed 260,000 soldiers to different regions for rescue operations. They were equipped with over 6,700 emergency vehicles and five aircraft to assist with relief efforts.

Several airports and major highways have been closed, and hundreds of thousands of people have been relocated to safer areas.

On Thursday morning, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. described the situation as unprecedented, highlighting the severe impact the typhoon has had across multiple regions.
