This highlighted by Dr Aline Uwimana, Division Manager of Maternal, Child and Community Health, in her message after receiving the health equipment to fight premature baby deaths.
Eighty (80) Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines worth nearly US$300,000 have been handed over to the Rwanda Biomedical Centre for distribution to neonatal and paediatric wards across the country.
“Continuous Positive Airway Pressure” (CPAP) was issued on November 10, 2023 and will be delivered to 80 hospitals across the country.
CPAP is a proven, cost-effective respiratory intervention that can reduce the risk of death in premature babies by nearly 50 percent, shorten hospital stays and reduce the need for referrals.
Dr Aline Uwimana, Division Manager. Maternal, Child and Community Health said that the Government of Rwanda prioritizes the care of children, including increasing the equipment needed in different hospitals.
“It is a continuous process to ensure that the equipment we have is properly managed, used properly and there is time to buy more to replace the old ones,” she said.
Min Yuan, the Deputy Director of UNICEF in Rwanda said UNICEF is delighted to continue partnership with Rwanda by donating these supplies to improve the lives, growth and development of mothers, newborns and children.
” A nation has a bright future when all its children are healthier. We thank all our donors for enabling us to provide these supplies.” she said.
Since 2021, UNICEF has committed to providing life-saving supplies and equipment totaling US$5 million.
This support has impacted an estimated 350,000 mothers and 1.5 million children annually.
