The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has appointed Mr. Charles Karangwa as the new head of its Global Nature Based Solution (NbS) Management hub.
Karangwa, a Rwandan national, brings with him over 18 years of experience in the Forests, Landscapes and Livelihoods Programme for Africa.
Charles Karangwa has been IUCN country representative for Rwanda from 2016 to 2022 when he was appointed IUCN Kenya Country Representative as well as Head of Land Systems-Africa Region.
In his new role, Karangwa will lead the IUCN’s efforts in developing and implementing nature-based solutions to address global environmental challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation.
These solutions involve the use of natural systems and processes to enhance resilience, mitigate risks, and provide benefits to people and nature.
Karangwa’s appointment comes at a critical time, as the world faces increasing pressures on its natural resources and ecosystems.
The IUCN is playing a key role in promoting sustainable development and conservation practices, and Karangwa’s expertise and leadership will be essential in driving these efforts forward.
Commenting on this appointment, Charles Karangwa said “I am honoured to take on this new role and look forward to working with colleagues and partners around the world to advance nature-based solutions for a sustainable future,”
He added that “Nature has the power to provide solutions to many of the challenges we face today, and I am committed to working towards a world where people and nature can thrive together.”
Karangwa’s role will also enhance sustainable financial investments into nature-based solutions, a key factor in phasing out nature-negative flows from both public and private sources.
“To achieve the desired results, we must urgently scale up investment in NbS which is currently underfunded,” he emphasized, noting the need to close the finance gap in supporting the achievement of global and national targets and legislation.
The IUCN has a long history of promoting nature-based solutions, and Karangwa’s appointment reinforces the organization’s commitment to this approach.
With his extensive experience and expertise, Karangwa is well-positioned to lead the NbS department in developing innovative and effective solutions that benefit both people and nature.
