Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng Juach, the Minister of Health for the Republic of South Sudan, delivered a compelling address during the International Health Ministers Summit held on December 4-5, 2024, Kigali.
Taking part in a panel discussion titled “Revisiting Strategies for Africa’s Fight Against HIV & AIDS – Strategies, Barriers, and the Road to Eradication,” Minister Juach emphasized the urgent need for both political will and financial investment in the fight against HIV and AIDS. In her remarks, Juach expressed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda for hosting the summit and acknowledged the contributions of various sponsors that made the event possible. She highlighted South Sudan’s status as one of the youngest nations in Africa, which presents unique challenges in addressing viral diseases, particularly HIV.
“While HIV remains the leading viral disease in our country, it has not received the priority it deserves,” said Juach. “Since assuming my role nearly three years ago, I have initiated strategic interventions to mitigate this disease.” Juach outlined her approach, emphasizing the importance of aligning national strategies with existing frameworks set out by neighboring countries like Sudan, Kenya, and Uganda. She also stressed the need to harmonize funding sources to ensure effective implementation of strategies without operating in silos.
“Commitment is paramount,” she declared, emphasizing that fragile states face numerous challenges, including malnutrition, malaria, and vaccination efforts, often sidelining the HIV crisis. “Inclusivity is essential; we must engage civil society organizations and individuals living with HIV in decision-making processes.”
The Minister acknowledged the support she receives from the leadership in South Sudan, including the President. She underscored the importance of fostering a transformative mindset to effectively combat the HIV epidemic.
Minister Juach concluded by calling for a unified effort in eradicating HIV and AIDS, reiterating that the path forward requires collaborative action grounded in the realities and strategies of each nation.
