The National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) and the Gender Monitoring Office (GMO) have joined forces in a groundbreaking initiative aimed at fostering statistical literacy and empowering journalists in the realm of gender-sensitive storytelling.

With a focus on harnessing the potential of data, this five-day training session, which opened Monday on November 2023 in Bugesera District, marks a pivotal step toward amplifying the impact of gender disaggregated data in media narratives.

The training is intended to help journalists from different media houses in Rwanda to enhance their capacity in interpreting and integrating gender-disaggregated data into their reporting. It is expected that participants demonstrating a keen interest in utilizing gender data from national surveys, will undergo an immersive experience designed to elevate their data analysis skills, specifically in the context of gender.

In his opening remark, Mr, Florien Rulihose, the Deputy Chief Gender Monitor welcomes the participants and recalls the objectives of the training emphasizes on GMO mandate.

By the conclusion of the training, these journalists are poised to catalyze a broader dissemination of gender data sourced from national surveys. Their enhanced ability to utilize gender-disaggregated data in reporting and advocacy efforts is anticipated to fuel evidence-based policy-making and decision processes at various levels.

The other ultimate vision is to enable these journalists to serve as catalysts for change, leveraging gender-disaggregated data to foster informed discourse, advocate for enhanced data production, and drive evidence-based decision-making processes across Rwanda.

This training marks a pivotal moment in Rwanda’s media landscape, where data storytelling takes on a gender-sensitive approach, ensuring that narratives reflect the diverse socio-economic realities of both men and women.

Whereas participants are set to be equipped with skills on enhanced data analysis, their stories are poised to contribute significantly to the ongoing discourse surrounding gender equality and informed policy formulation.
