A single kilogram of Rwandan specialty coffee fetched an unprecedented 670,000 Rwandan francs (approx. $480) in an online auction, marking a historic record for the country’s coffee sector.
The record-breaking lot came from K-Organics, a producer based in Southern Province’s Huye District. The winning bid represents approximately 66 times the prevailing average market rate for green coffee on the international market.
The lot was selected as part of the third annual ‘Best of Rwanda’ competition, organized by the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB). Out of 320 submissions gathered nationwide, a panel of national and international cuppers evaluated and selected the top 31 winning coffee lots.
“I am delighted with this price. It will help us further invest in producing specialty coffee and improve the livelihoods of our local farmers,” said Evariste Karangwa, owner of K-Organics Ltd.
Winning lots from the auction attracted buyers across multiple regions, including North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
NAEB Director General Claude Bizimana emphasized that the competition highlights the growing international reputation of Rwandan coffee and the strength of local industry collaboration.
“What we have achieved today is a clear result of collective effort. Every bid placed during this auction reflects international appreciation for the exceptional quality of Rwandan coffee, as well as new investment entering the sector.”
The annual event aims to reward farmers, processors, and exporters for maintaining high-quality standards while elevating the profile of Rwandan-origin coffee in premium global markets.
Beyond the competition, NAEB continues to focus on improving coffee quality, farm-to-cup traceability, and sustainable sector growth to boost export revenues for the East African nation.
