Rwanda’s football governing body (FERWAFA) expects the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to reconsider their decision to order Amavubi to host their fourth Group L match day of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cotonou before an appeal was subsequently filed on Tuesday.
Rwanda, who held Benin to a 1-1 draw in Cotonou, was expected to host their fourth return against the same country at Huye Stadium on March 27 but CAF revoked the stadium’s rights to host the game after Benin complained that Huye town does not have standard hotels to accommodate their team and match officials.
CAF, as a result, ordered Rwanda to play their return leg against the West African country in Cotonou, a decision which didn’t go well with Rwanda FA officials who immediately filed an appeal to challenge CAF’s decision.
The federation told Carlos Alos Ferrer and his men to return to Kigali after the match in Cotonou as the appeal remains pending CAF’s reaction.
“We are waiting for the CAF decision. If anything new comes up, I will keep you posted,” FERWAFA Secretary General Henry Muhire told Times Sport.
Now that chances to host Benin at Huye Stadium remain uncertain due to substandard hotels, Times Sport understands that Rwanda could consider hosting the game in either Dar es Salaam, Tanzania or Lome in Togo as their preferable alternatives.
Rwanda remained third in Group D with two points while Benin picked their first point on Wednesday after losing their first two games.
Should the match against Benin be played out of the country, Rwanda would be going four games in a row playing away from home.
