Rwanda’s National Meteorology Agency, Meteo Rwanda, has announced that January 2026 is expected to receive rainfall ranging between 50 and 300 millimeters, slightly above the usual average for this time of year.

Under normal conditions, January rainfall typically falls between 26 and 269 millimeters. The anticipated increase is linked to the interaction of wind systems moving from the Southern Hemisphere toward the region where Rwanda is located.

Rainfall is expected to be more intense in the Western, Northern, and Southern Provinces, as well as in the City of Kigali and some parts of the Eastern Province.

The highest rainfall amounts, between 250 and 300 millimeters, are forecast for the districts of Rusizi and Nyamasheke; the western parts of Musanze and Nyabihu; and Rubavu, Rutsiro, Karongi, Nyamagabe, and Nyaruguru.

Rainfall ranging from 200 to 250 millimeters is expected across the rest of the Western Province, in the districts of Musanze, Nyamagabe, and Nyaruguru; the City of Kigali; and the districts of Muhanga, Huye, Gisagara, Nyanza, Ruhango, Gakenke, Kamonyi, and Rulindo, as well as the northwestern parts of Burera District.

Meanwhile, rainfall of between 150 and 200 millimeters is forecast for Bugesera District, the remaining areas of the City of Kigali, and the districts of Gakenke, Rulindo, Kamonyi, Ruhango, and Nyanza. Similar amounts are also expected in the southern parts of Kirehe, Gicumbi, and Burera; small western sections of Gatsibo District; and in Ngoma and Rwamagana.

Lower rainfall, estimated at between 50 and 100 millimeters, is expected in parts of Kayonza, Gatsibo, and Nyagatare districts.

Daytime temperatures are forecast to range between 21 and 30 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to between 9 and 18 degrees Celsius. Moderate to occasionally strong winds, with speeds of 4 to 12 meters per second, are also expected across various parts of the country.

This outlook is intended to help residents and stakeholders prepare for the weather conditions expected throughout the month.
