Every year on February 1, Rwanda commemorates Heroes’ Day, a national occasion dedicated to honoring the men and women whose bravery shaped the country’s history. In 2026, the day was once again marked at the village level across the country under the theme: “Heroism and National Unity as Pillars of Development.”
In this context, on this Sunday, February 1, 2026, Heroes’ Day was celebrated across various villages in Gatsibo District. The official district-level commemoration took place in Gasabo Village, located in Butiruka Cell, Remera Sector.
As Rwanda marked the 32nd anniversary of Heroes’ Day, members of the Gatsibo District Executive Committee, together with security organs, joined residents from different villages to reflect on and celebrate the achievements made possible through unity and collective effort.
Participants in the Heroes’ Day celebration in Gatsibo District attended a special talk centered on the national theme, “Heroism and National Unity as Pillars of Development.” The presentation was delivered by Hategekimana Achille Samson, the director in charge of governance in Gatsibo District.
Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor of Gatsibo District, Richard Gasana, paid tribute to the heroes who sacrificed themselves to liberate Rwanda, noting that some gave their lives so the nation could exist and Rwandans could live together in unity.
He encouraged residents of Remera Sector to continue safeguarding unity and to actively contribute to development through their daily initiatives and community-based projects.
The district-level commemoration in Remera Sector was marked by cultural dances, traditional poetry, discussions on heroism, and a keynote address delivered by Mayor Gasana Richard.
In addition to the commemorative activities, Heroes’ Day was also an occasion for solidarity. Across different sectors of Gatsibo District, support was extended to vulnerable families. Assistance included cows, iron sheets, household items, and food supplies, reflecting the spirit of unity and shared responsibility that the day represents.
