Ministers of the Congo Basin Climate Commission (CCBC) held a virtual meeting to report on the progress of the 2nd meeting of the three basins of biodiversity and tropical forests, in order to find a sustainable solution of ecosystems vulnerable to climate change.
The Minister of Environment Dr Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya participated in this meeting on July 10, 2023, and the advances are promising as the organizers announced.
Called the Amazonia-Borneo Mekong South East Asia-Congo summit, this great summit of the three tropical forest basins, has as its main challenge to set up a strictly South-South governan.
Also, it will make it possible to form a global coalition intended to support the United Nations decade 2021-2030, for the restoration of ecosystems and will make the synthesis between the climate and biodiversity issues dealt with separately by the United Nations system, through two different Conferences of the Parties (COPs).Opened by Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso, the meeting of CCBC Ministers enabled the various participants (ministers, technical and financial partners, civil society, etc.) to inquire about the level of progress in the organization of the next summit of the three basins of biodiversity ecosystems and tropical forests.
In his speech, Mr. Anatole Collinet Makoso affirmed that these three basins of the biodiversity and forest ecosystem represent 80% of the biodiversity of the planet and, therefore, carry the status of regulator of the carbon balance.
In addition, he informed the audience that this summit will welcome high-level official delegations from the 31 Member States of the three Basins, Heads of State of Government and international organizations.
At this stage, several advances are to be noted on the institutional, political and technical levels, explains Mrs. Arlette Soudan Nonault, Minister of the Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin, Technical Coordinator of the CCBC, she declared.
On the political level, following the various visits made in February 2023 by Mrs. Arlette Soudan Nonault to Brazil, Indonesia, United Nations headquarters and Morocco, during which she had the approval of administrative and financial support from these various States and organizations at this meeting of the three basins in Brazzaville.
From a technical point of view, there was the recruitment of three large firms representing the three basins which are active in the preparations for this event.
For further clarification, stakeholders at this meeting of CCBC Ministers shared their concerns regarding the water, plastic pollution and carbon market sectors during the question-and-answer session chaired by the Minister. Arlette Sudan Nonault. At the same time, declared that the development of the work plan which must be budgeted for the organization of the summit must be finalized as of July 15. She also announced the dates of the next meetings in connection with those of Brazzaville which will be held in Morocco, New York, Nairobi and many other events related to climates and biodiversity.
Why the contribution of northern partners to this summit?
To this question, Minister Arlette Soudan Nonault declared: “whether it is desertification, whether it is the disappearance of islands, we are all confronted with questions of climate change, and we all need partners from the North, because that we are also in the same planet and we cannot do without all the northern partners”.
Thus, the Vatican, America, the European Union are among these northern partners who will take part in the 2nd summit of the three basins of biodiversity ecosystems and tropical forests.
As a reminder, the 1st summit of the three tropical forest basins was held in Brazzaville, from May 29 to July 1, 2011, at the initiative of the Congo Basin Climate Commission, chaired by His Excellency Dénis Sassou-Nguesso, President of the Republic of the Congo. After this summit, the Congo Basin endowed itself with a financial instrument which is none other than the Blue Fund for the Congo Basin (FBBC).
According to the Agence de l’Information Environmental, the 2nd Amazonia-Borneo Mekong South East Asia-Congo summit, which will be held from October 26 to 28, 2023 in Brazzaville, will obviously be an opportunity to create a platform for sub-regional and intercontinental scientific and technical cooperation between the three sub-regions.
